Global Inspired Thanks to a handful of forward-thinking designers, there’s no need to travel to the far ends of the earth to pick up some exotic-looking threads. Balenciaga’s Nicholas Ghesquiere led the charge with his global nomad looks, while Anna Sui and Roberto Cavalli played with ikat stripes and other ethnic-inspired textiles. Even one jaunty piece can satisfy the city dweller’s sense of wanderlust.
Preppy The season’s most polished pieces—trim-fitting khakis, boyish blazers, and collegiate pea-coats—borrow from the private school uniform. Wearing yours with rich-looking separates—from fur collars to frame-bags and colorful silk dresses—will earn you straight A’s. Tuxedo Inspired Designers put a feminine spin on the classic men’s tuxedo this season, turning out smoking jacket-inspired dresses, black silk palazzo pants, and double-breasted jackets. To test-drive the fine and dandy look, stick to the sophisticated black and white palette which dominated the runway shows.
Lace-up Booties In addition to being the most popular new style—versions of the lace-up style were spotted on Chloe, Fendi, and Versace runways, among others—the season’s It-Shoe is also the most versatile. Wear yours with skirts, dresses, or even the equally essential trouser-style jean.
